Winter Star Gazing by Tina Ashton

Step by Step by Tina Ashton

Hi Lavinians 🧚‍♀️ Hope you enjoy today’s tutorial named Winter star gazing.

Step 1.

Get a sheet of A4 white card and from a Landscape orientation, fold it in half to make a card.  Run a bone folder along the fold. Open out the front of the card and fold it back on itself, in half, until the edge meets with the first centre fold of the card.

Step 2.

Mark your folded card faintly at 6cm from the top, then cut off the whole of the top at this mark with a guillotine.  You now have two separate folded cards, large and small.

Step 3.

Take the smallest folded card and flip it over so that the longest side is uppermost facing you.  From approximately 3.5cm up from the bottom left corner, draw a faint pencil line all the way across to the right side creating a hill.  See photo.

Step 4.

With a good strong scissors and the folded small card in your hand, cut along the line you have drawn in pencil, making sure you also cut through the folded parts of the card at the back.  Set both of your folded cards to one side for now.

Step 5.

Get a sheet of Lavinia Multifarious White card and cut a piece to 14.5cm x 14cm.

Step 6.

With the tallest piece of the card(14.5cm) length upright in portrait, get ready to ink up your background.  Using Distress Oxides in Salvaged Patina, Prize Ribbon and Blue Print Sketch. Add a band of each colour to your inking mat, with the lightest shade at the bottom and darkest at the top.

Step 7.

Spray with water then lay your card on to it, move it a little on the mat to blend the colours a little.

Step 8.

Once dried, get your Versafine Clair Twilight and brush on at the top and top edges of the card to darken the sky further.

Step 9.

Cut the finished background in half into two panels, both at 7cm wide (by 14.5cm high).

Step 10.

Stamp the left side panel with the Cedar Stamp in Versafine Clair Twilight and Warm Breeze, using 1st and 2nd generation stamping, a few times along the left side of this panel.  Then stamp the right-side panel with Small Pine Trees Stamps, various sizes, in Versafine Clair Twilight, Warm Breeze and Paradise, several times again in 1st and 2nd generation stamping.

Step 11.

With a Posca or a White Gel Pen add in different size dots for the stars in the sky at the uppermost part of both panels.  Also add white gel pen to the branches of the Cedar and Pine Trees for a snowy effect.  Put both panels to one side.

Step 12.

On a piece of white card Stamp Oakley using Versafine Clair Fallen Leaves.  I stamped mine in 2nd generation, or you can simply choose to ink it lightly.

Step 13.

I then added highlights and shadows to Oakley using my Koh-I-Noor Soft Pastel Pencils in white and brown just to enhance his shape.

Step 14.

With a small scissors Fussy Cut Oakley out as best you can. Don’t worry about the white areas between his thin legs, these will disappear against the snowy background!  Put Oakley to one side.

Step 15.

Take your smallest white folded card and brush the hilltop gently with some Elements Ink in Blue Lagoon, all along the top edge only.

Step 16.

Take your larger folded card and stick on the 2 background panels you have created using glue or double-sided tape.  The one panel with the Cedar stamp to the left goes on the front fold to the far left.  The other panel with the trees to the right goes to the far right.  Leave a little white edge around each panel for best effect.

Step 17.

Stamp your large, folded card and your small, folded card with the sentiments ‘Just for You’ and ‘With Love’ from the Heartfelt Verses Stamps in Versa fine Clair Nocturne. See the picture for placement.

Step 18.

It’s now time to assemble your card!  Using double sided tape or glue stick the smaller folded card on to the larger folded card as shown in the photo.  Use the glue or tape ONLY on the areas of folded card at points A and B shown in the photo.

Step 19.

Stick Oakley on to the front of the snowy hill so that he is peeping across into the centre of the card.  Make sure that you ONLY place glue on the parts of Oakley where he will stick to the panel/card!

Step 20.

Highlight your stars with white pastel pencil and add some shadow beneath Oakley with a dark blue pastel pencil.  I smudged these bits gently to soften them using a cotton bud.  Add sparkle if you wish and your Winter Star Gazing Card is now complete!
