Seren’s Midnight Magic by Julia Wyatt
Hello everyone.
I hope you like this piece I created for the July Creative Challenge, “Midnight Magic”.
I thought I would write a quick step by step for you so you can do the same. Of course, nothing is set in stone and you can change the colours to suit the stock you have of your own.
I look forward to seeing your creations.

The supplies I used are:
Lavinia Multifarious Card cut to 11.5cmx19.5cm
Versafine Claire Nocturne
Versafine Claire Twilight
Distress Oxide Faded Jeans
Distress Oxide Vintage Photo
Holographic Glitter
Jiminy stamp
Seren Stamp
Tree of Courage
Magic surrounds us word stamp
Gelly Roll Glitter Pen
Lavinia Acetate Hill Masks
Lavinia Acetate Circle Masks
Lavinia Laurel Stencil
The Steps in creating the card
(click on the first image to view as a slideshow)
- 1. Tape down your piece of card to help prevent it moving. Then tape the stencil over the top. With a blending brush or sponge using Faded Jeans Distress Oxide gently sweep the brush across your ink pad and gently sweep the brush or sponge across your stencil as above. If you always sweep down in the same direction you will have a darker top side line to the design than the bottom giving a faded affect.
- 2. Next take the ‘Tree of Courage stamp’ and using a stamp platform or your acrylic block place the tree approximately a quarter of the way up the page from the bottom and stamp using Versafine Claire Twilight and stamp your image.
- 3. Using Versafine Claire Nocturne take Seren onto you block and stamp just across the bottom of the tree as above, then stamp Jiminy close by Seren. And using Versafine Claire Twilight finish the Tree of Courage with the tassels to dangle down the tree.
- 4. To create the base of the card take Distress Oxide Vintage Photo and the ‘Hill Masks’ place the mask just level with Seren, (If you don’t have the hill masks you can tear paper to get the same effect as using the mask) so as to ground her and gently sweep downwards using a sponge or blending brush. Adjust the mask according to feet and posts and the tree so that everything is grounded and not floating as in the above photo.
- 5. Then carefully splatter the lower half (vintage photo) with water and leave for a few seconds. Using a piece of kitchen towel or tissue then dab up the excess water. This leaves a textured affect.
- 6. Using the circle mask place it over Seren and the tree and take the Distress Oxide Faded Jeans and your blending brush/sponge and gently stroke outwards from the mask thus creating the moon affect when this is removed. Place the circle mask back over the moon and carefully draw with the Gelly roll glitter pen around the circumference of the mask. This just gives a gentle shine.
- 7. Taking Versafine Claire Twilight using the ‘Magic Surrounds Us’ words, stamp this around the edge of the card as per the picture above. Using Versafine Claire Twilight and a sponge with a sweeping motion stroke from outside into the card to gently soften and darken the edge of your almost finished picture.
- 8. Using a water brush and the faded jeans distress oxides gently paint Seren’s wings and hair. Then using Distress Oxide Vintage photo, do the same to the trunk of the tree.
- 9. Using glue of your choice dot the wings and the tree tassels and apply the holographic glitter. Allow to dry and then mount onto a piece of black card or card of your choice in my case it was for my Lavinia Journal.
Have a go, have fun! Can’t wait to see your creation.
