Poppies and Fairies by Angelique

Hello, lovely Lavinians,

I’m here to show you how I created my card for the June challenge, with the theme ‘My favourite Colour’

As you might know, my favourite colour is red. And when I think of red, poppies come to mind. They are one of my favourite flowers. The ideal combination to create a card.

The supplies I used are:

Stencils: ‘LAUREL’ and the largest of the set ‘MOONMASKS’

Stamps: ‘GROUP POPPIES’ and ‘FAIRY FORAGERS’

Inks: Element ink Paprika and Versafine Clair Nocturne.

A fine brush

Gelly roll pen 0.8 white

Gelly roll stardust RED (or matching the Element ink of your choice)

Also, but not in the picture below: some watered down Brusho YELLOW, a fan brush and a finger dauber.

The Steps in creating the card

On a 5” x 5” panel of white Multifarious card, I centered the large moonmask. Then I arranged the stencil ‘LAUREL’ over it. You can either tape them down to your work surface, or, as I did, use the Ranger ‘Make Art Stay-tion’ The powerful magnets of this tool keep the stencils and the paper secure.

With a brush and very lightly, brush on the Elements ink Paprika (or any other colour of your choice) from the right upper corner, towards the middle of the circle. Be very lighthanded, so the colour on the card is more of a pink, than a vibrant red. We want the poppies to be the focal point of this card. Then brush on the black ink, from the left up to the red ink. Again, very lightly, so it’s more of a grey tone. Then splash on some tiny drops of water (with your hand, a brush or a spray bottle if you like) and lift off some colour with kitchen paper.

Pick up some Elements ink with a fan brush and splatter some on to the card. Make sure the splatters will only end up within the inked up circle. Tip: put down the moon mask again, and align it with the circle, so no red splatters will end up on the white of the panel.

Stamp the lovely poppies just a little off center to the left with the Versafine Clair Nocturne ink.

Tear up a piece of paper and use this as a mask, to ‘ground’ the poppies. I used a finger dauber to apply the ink, but you can also use a smoothie, a q-tip, a small brush…whatever you prefer.

Take the fine brush, and a teeny tiny drop of water to pick up some ink, and colour in the flowers.

Ink up the fairy forager with the lantern, and stamp her above the flower, so her lantern shines on the flower. With the red stardust and the white gelly roll pen add some highlights and glittery dots. Don’t overthink this, just randomly dot on some sparkle and light.

Make sure the ink of the stamp is well dried (or use a heat gun to speed up this process) and, with a very watered down Yellow Brusho, colour in the light of the lantern. If it gets too bright, dab off some colour with a piece of kitchen paper. With a fingerdauber and the black ink that is left on it, distress the edges of the panel a little. Now would be the time to add a sentiment if you wish. I chose the verse ‘BELIEVE IN MAGIC’ and stamped it in Versafine Clair Nocturne.
