Etching Glass using Cutting Files by Maggs Barrett

Etching-16This step by step tutorial comes courtesy of Design Team member, Maggs Barrett.

She shows us how a Lavinia Stamps cutting file can be used to produce a stencil, through which to etch a pattern on a glass jar.

“I’m a big fan of Yankee Candles and I love the shape of the lidded jar they come in at Asda.

They also make perfect storage jars, so once I have finished with the candle, rather than throw them away, I wash them and put them to another use.

Of course we know they are candle heat proof as there was already a candle in them, so they could also be used to put a tea light in, or use as a small vase.

So below I have done a tutorial using etching paste with the cutting files. I used ‘Sky’ as I adore her”

You will need:

  1. A suitable jar
  2. A Lavinia Stamps Cutting file such a “Sky”
  3. A small piece if vinyl
  4. Etching Paste
  5. A small craft knife
  6. Masking tape
  7. A herd rubber scraper or squeegee
  8. A Dremel Vice
  9. Goggles and protective gloves
