Peeling back History

As work begins and layers are peeled away from each room, hidden gems are slowly being revealed. This is a quick tour around Plas Coch by wallpaper design! First of all there’s the wallpaper with the vase that was hiding in the downstairs office underneath a more recent layer of woodchip.

Just next door to this you could find these bright yellow and brown florals, as in the photograph below. This lovely design was hidden beneath layers on the walls of what had previously been the Front Bar.

On the walls of the back bar you could find, as seen below, a much darker wallpaper with grapes on a vine in browns, black and peach. I wonder how true these colours are to when they were first put on the walls..?

Finally here’s a selection of some wallpapers found on the very top floor. With checks in one room and a lovely yellow, pink and teal floral pattern in another you can start to imagine what the rooms might have looked like. The floral pattern reminded me of the 1980’s Laura Ashley “Emma” perfume packaging crossed with a hefty dose of William Morris Golden Lily wallpaper pattern. I did a little research and managed to find some very similar fabric by Sandersons in the 1970’s. Without photographs or personal recollections it’s very difficult to pin a time to these papers…but Oh! what wonderful peep into the past of Plas Coch!
