In Search of Bats

To ensure we are safe to proceed with building works it was important to have a survey done to see if there were any bats in the building. The team assembled to welcome the man who would be looking for bats. As you can imagine it was difficult not to drop the occasional Batman comment in, but we were very restrained. It must be a regular annoyance and pretty predictable these Batman jokes for the investigators every time they go to a new property.

Truly the idea of bats in your belfry or in your property is no laughing matter. There are 18 species of bat in the UK with some Lesser Horseshoe Bats already living up the road on Castle Street in a Grade I Listed property. According to the Bat Conservation TrustBats do not make nests, but choose various places throughout the year to roost. Bats roost in houses, both new and old but some species prefer hollow trees, or caves. In buildings they often shelter behind hanging tiles and boarding or in roof spaces.” As bats are a protected species, it’s important to make sure that the work at Plas Coch doesn’t cause them harm.

It’s amazing the things you learn when you are undertaking a new project, in this case a blog that records all aspects of the Renovation process. Did you know there is a National Bat Helpline? No? Neither did I! (National Bat Helpline 0345 1300 228)

Russell, the Batman, arrived and was straight to business. He checked the building and even stepped outside onto the scaffolding, escorted by Callum, to see if there were any signs of bats. He noted there were spaces for bats to get in but Russell decided he wanted to do at least another visit.

Stay tuned for…Batman Returns.
