Who or what is Wattle and Daub? Another dynamic duo?
Good question. I did a little research to see how to describe it properly and this is what I came up with: Wattle is an arrangement of small timbers that create a framework to support mud based daub. Daub was applied from both sides in large damp balls known as cats. It has been suggested that they used straw from animal beds was used in the mud based mix … which sounds very smelly.
From my schoolgirl memories of history lessons I knew it was something old! So imagine how exciting it was as the bones of the house started to be uncovered, that wattle and daub was found in Plas Coch. This would have been the original construction, so has been with the property from its beginning.
You can see the panels of wattle and daub here in the small snug room.
Not only were we faced with stunning examples of wattle and daub by the stairs, but also as the paint and wallpaper started to be removed we started to get a peak at some bricks and wooden beams that we hadn’t really expected to find.
